OUT OF THIN AIR Artist Talk with Michael Massenburg

Welcome to Los Angeles, the City of Angels as it is known, a magical and enchanting landscape of diversity in the arts and culture bringing together influences from across the world. The exhibition titled "Out of Thin Air" curated by Ginger Van Hook celebrates the fine arts in Southern California where the weather contributes to the inspiration of unique works and our sunshine creates an ambiance and glow in which to create art. Some artists choose to paint outside in 'plein-air' or within studios where the shadows of airplanes fly over their roofs. In this exhibition, one will see traditional oil painting, wood carvings and emerging digital and film technologies adapted to the canvas. A significant collection of Paintings and Mixed Media works are exhibited in Terminal One, Gate Two, between April 20th, 2012 and October 2012. Eleven (11) artists representing the immediate LAX Airport community and surrounding local areas, derive a certain amount of inspiration, interpretation and motivation, "Out of Thin Air". Also these artists influence each other by virtue of living, working, practicing and experiencing artwork in the LAX community of Los Angeles, including several alumni from Otis College of Art and Design, the art school that borders the runway of one of the nations' busiest airports. The following are the artists in the exhibition: "Out of Thin Air" Painters and Mixed Media: Mark X Farina, Renée Fox, Steve Fujimoto, Michael Giancristiano, Shizuko Greenblatt, Scott Grieger, Michael Massenburg, Kenneth Ober, Holly Tempo, Luke Van Hook and Hung Viet Nguyen, help to demonstrate the diversity and complexity of creativity from the inspiration of practicing their art in Los Angeles. http://michaelmassenburg.daportfolio.com/ http://finearttrekkinairportlaxoutofthinair.blogspot.com/ Directed, Edited and Produced by Ginger Van Hook www.gingervanhook.com

Out Of Thin Air Artist Talk with Shizuko Greenblatt!

Out of Thin Air @ LAX Airport, Curated by Ginger Van Hook Welcome to the City of Angels. Often called the "Creative Capital of the World," Los Angeles is an assemblage of people, places, and ideas, blending and overlaying influences from across the world. This exhibition, curated by Ginger Van Hook, celebrates eleven contemporary artists who derive inspiration, interpretation, and motivation from living in Los Angeles. Offering original artworks, which seemingly come out of thin air, these artists reflect on their physical and metaphorical surroundings. Kenneth Ober, Luke Van Hook, Holly Tempo, Hung Viet Nguyen, and Michael Giancristiano demonstrate diverse approaches in examining and interpreting the landscape, both in its natural and urban states. From intricate renderings to fields of repetitive patterns, each artist has an individual aesthetic response to the environment. Renée Fox takes a micro view of nature in her artworks. Narrowing her focus to the propagation of a flower, or the power of a single seed, Fox shows an appreciation for minuscule forms of life. Artists Shizuko Greenblatt, Michael Massenburg, Steve Fujimoto, and Mark X Farina mix color, symbols, and pop culture to express energy, sound, and comic book morality. Scott Grieger uses digital technology, art, and design to manipulate and adopt elements such as a splash of paint from a drawing and color from a neon sign on the Las Vegas strip into a formal and balanced composition of color, texture, and form. http://finearttrekkinairportlaxoutofthinair.blogspot.com

Artist and painter Scott Grieger, also a professor having earned the recognition of a lifetime achievement award for the education and propagation of the fine arts, is a celebrated local Inglewood artist and teacher on the faculty at Otis College, exhibiting a work he created when the digital revolution was just exploding on the scene and computers were just beginning to influence painting, titled "This That and The Other Thing". Scott Grieger states, "about the time I had a gig as an artist in residence at the University of Nevada Las Vegas I was just getting started with computers. I wanted to figure out some sort of expressive potential in by today's standards was a primitive technology. I found a splash of paint in a drawing, scanned it, resized it several times, flipped it and turned it upside down and scanned it again to create the composition you see in the painting. If you will notice the graphic motif of the composition is the same splash arranged over and over to create different looking images. One night when I stepped out on the balcony of the studio the university had provided me with I noticed the beautiful color schemes of the neon signs on the Las Vegas strip and decided to adopt one of the color schemes I saw. The next step was to have the image run through a plotter that cuts stencils and used it to paint the images on to the panel. The collision of the highly pixilated-stenciled composition and the colors struck a perfect balance and led to the finished work you see today. For the tourists visiting our fair city of Los Angeles, California, the inspiration Scott Grieger achieved in this work reflects upon the proximity of Los Angeles to the thriving art and gaming communities just about 8 hours away in Las Vegas, Nevada a popular destination for all the locals as well! http://scottgrieger.com/ http://finearttrekkinairportlaxoutofthinair.blogspot.com/ Directed, Edited and Produced by Ginger Van Hook www.gingervanhook.com

Paper or Plastic? Luke and Ginger Van Hook Solo show at Gallery 825

"Paper or Plastic?" A collaborative Solo Show by Luke and Ginger Van Hook September 2012 Presented by Los Angeles Art Association Opening at Gallery 825 The exhibition, titled "Paper or Plastic?" seeks to extend the dialogue of the light and space movement by showcasing small intimate works normally reserved for recycling or disposal. Light as life becomes the focal point of the exploration. The ephemeral qualities exhibited by inanimate objects becoming living works of art are where the exploration of light and space in the sciences and arts intersect and this theme opens a portal into a new dimension of art. This exhibition/installation hopes to raise new questions about the human condition and the functionality of recycled materials. "Paper or Plastic?" additionally explores the unique phenomenon of refracted light in the confines of a dark space. This investigates how physical materials can transcend their mediums generating further dialogue about reincarnation via the metaphor to do with the decay of light interacting with recycling. The evolution of their collaborative process drives their artistic direction to combine the elements of painting with oils (as the medium of plastics) and painting with lights (utilizing the medium of LED lights) thus merging two distinct art practices of an oil painter, Luke Van Hook and a photographer, Ginger Van Hook, a husband and wife team. Le Petit Jardin at LAX Ginger Van Hook

“Le Petit Jardin” @ LAX Curated by Ginger Van Hook ©2012 We celebrate Los Angeles in Bloom with “Le Petit Jardin @ LAX” curated by Ginger Van Hook or translated from French to “The Little Garden @ LAX”. One will see images of nature, gardens, and abstract versions of nature depicting our relationship with and the intimacy that we share with nature. Often subjects of still life paintings, photographs or renderings, nature plays a pivotal role in our landscape of the Greater Los Angeles basin and “Le Petit Jardin @ LAX” captures this world of green thumbs expanding upon the vitality of our unique paradise. Once a desert, Los Angeles has blossomed and with it, the culture of fine arts has come into full bloom. Artists like Linda Kunik, Founder of “Plant it Forward” and Ann Summa, a Photojournalist for the Los Angeles Times, both elevate the community garden to a higher level with photographic documentation and creative excellence. Watercolorist Gayle Garner Roski depicts the serenity of water lilies and reveals important history by rendering the reflections of a California Mission. Photographers Ginger Van Hook, Jenelle Casarez, Roger Thomas and Ingrid Dietrich reveal our relationship with Oriental Gardens. Artists Michael Verbenec and Anne Cheek La Rose focus on the blooming Los Angeles desert, while Photographers Frank Zgonc, Phil Tarley, Krista Marlene and Ellen Cantor expose the softer side of LA with rose petals, bamboo and the vibrancy of flowers, tulips and orchids. Artists and oil painters Renée Fox, Patricia Meisels, Kuniko Ruch, Kate Davis Caldwell, Terry Arena and Carol Spence use sensual orchids, dancing California Poppies, climbing Rose trellises, seeds, ferns, green lawns, and Lavender Irises to reveal their natural environments. Oil Painters and mixed media artists Karrie Ross, Marlene Yamada, Juna Amano, Laura B. Ginger Van Hook Art Tour@LAX. OUT OF THIN AIR.

A walking art tour of the exhibition "OUT OF THIN AIR" hosted by the curator, Ginger Van Hook. Artist from the LAX Airport Art Community come together to interpret the theme in Terminal One Gate 2. Out of Thin Air Welcome to the City of Angels. Often called the “Creative Capital of the World,” Los Angeles is an assemblage of people, places, and ideas, blending and overlaying influences from across the world.
